By the term "inventory" we most often mean the inventory of these goods by their nature, i.e. by their actual condition. The word has a similar meaning in the context of architectural objects – these are various techniques aimed at recreating the plan of an existing building or part of it as it really is. The most modern of these methods are based on the use of 3D technologies.
What is the purpose of an inventory of buildings?
An inventory of buildings is carried out before a planned major intervention in the design and appearance of the facility, for example, reconstruction, expansion, demolition, archaeological or conservation work. Thanks to them, it is possible to obtain an accurate up-to-date plan of the building, on the basis of which the course of further work will be planned. The responsibility for carrying out such an inventory lies with investors and owners who plan to carry out specific activities, especially in the case of historical buildings, the original plans of which are no longer available. Sometimes 3D technology inventory of buildings can be used for commercial purposes, for example, to create exact copies of existing facilities for the needs of the cinema or computer industry.

3D inventory is based on the use of three types of devices — LED scanners, laser scanners and digital cameras.

Laser Scanner
3D laser scanners are based on remote sensing technology. The measurement is carried out as follows: the device emits a beam of coherent light in a given direction, which is reflected from the surface and returns the same way to the radiator, where it is detected by an equivalent sensor. Based on the data on the time of the launch and return of the beam, the device calculates the position in three-dimensional space of the point from which the beam was reflected. Within a second, the device can make thousands of measurements (even up to a million) and use them to create a so-called cloud, i.e. a three-dimensional map of a given area.

LED scanner
LED scanners, also called optical scanners, work similarly to laser scanners. They emit white light onto the scanned surface in the form of straight lines of various structures — their density, location and quantity change over time. Sensitive cameras record how straight lines break into irregularities and transmit this image to a computer, which creates a virtual image of the object. Within a second, the scanner is able to collect information about 2.6 million points on the surface of the scanned object.

Digital photography
Digital cameras are used in building inventory to obtain photogrammetric photographs or photograms. Photograms are nothing more than photographs of a given aircraft, giving detailed information about its appearance. They are used, in particular, to document the facades of buildings or quarries or to create virtual models of objects.
